Dark and delicious
Steaming black viscous
Pour in some sugar and cream
Stir it up slowly, blow on it coldly
Sit back and wait for a dream
Stoned at McDonalds
Surrounded by Ronalds
I'm vaguely aware of life's theme
It cost you a dollar
This life that you've ordered
And you see it through curtains of steam.
Behind the bright smilers
who line the bright counters
Ten Billion Big Macs on display
The managers nervous
that one in his service
will forget to say "Have a nice day."
Empty and worse
I'm enjoying my curse
to watch them but never join in
They're hungry for burgers
They'll drive a mile further
To eat somewhere else is a sin.
Detached and dying
Subtracted from trying
I've honed my thought down to a nibbin
Disturbing the Grace
"I'm tired of this place
Let's go to the Seven-Eleven!"
I drive the few blocks
While the radio rocks
Another hit by Debbie Boone
It's empty as hell
But the coffee is swell
Alone in my well lighted tomb
Alone with Azar
who packs a Tazar
I'm vaguely aware of life's theme
It cost you a dollar
This life that you've ordered
And you see it through curtains of steam.

Coffee: Dark and delicious, steaming, black and viscous. I had my first cup in 1973 at the age of 27 at a diner in Flagstaff AZ. I sat there with several Native Americans (Navajo) who were starting their day with a cup a' Jo, so I joined in. My coffee-virgin brain cells awoke instantly! I saw colors I had never seen, my third eye vision sharpened, I recognized these Java'jo's as Jungian Archtypes, Portals to the Universal Unconscious of which I was a part. I ordered another cup.
Nineteen ninety two found me working a second job at a Barney's Coffee and Tea. We brewed and drank coffee all day. This was before Barney sold out and quality nosedived. I even had dinner with Barney once. Nice guy. A typical day would involve about 10 cups. By closing time we were giddy, bouncing off the walls, complaining of heart palpatations.
Thirty years after that first cup, I still like it light and sweet, very sweet. Last year I cut out the half and half in exchange for non dairy creamer and dropped my Cholestral by 20 points! I've tried changing the caffeine delivery system to Coke, especially in the Summer but it's not the same. I prefer that instant charge from a stiff cup. I grind my own beans, of course, and usually have Starbucks on hand. But for the best coffee you've ever tasted stateside, try a pound of Peet's. It's fresh roasted on order and shipped overnight. The oils literally shine on the surface of the beans! Try El Dorado blend. Of course the French have delicious coffee, and the memory of the Jamaican Blue Mountain you were served in Montego Bay will last a life time. Same for Kona while in Hawaii.
And so, to all bloggers who enjoy this unlikely combination of relaxation and speed, join me for a hearty cup of Columbian this morning.
