I made it through another day! Believe me, sometimes that's a victory. Not only did I make it through another day with my self respect intact, but I accomplished a number of productive tasks! First of all, I succesfully bargained for a new sofa. Our old one was in horrible tatters, dingy and ripped from various dogs, cats and humans. The new one wasn't really new, it used but in fine shape. One mans' trash is another's treasure.

So then I had the problem of how to get it into our home (I was alone and the sofa was fairly heavy and bulky). I was outside my house, standing in the cold and wind, freezing, when I noticed this young fella walking up the street. I didn't recognize him from the neighborhood and as he approached realized he was selling some useless stuff door to door. Usually I hate these encounters and, in the end I would end up becoming overly rude. This time I smiled and waved and engaged this young man. As he started into his selling spiel, I said, "I'll tell you what, I don't have much money except for a bunch of change here in my pocket. But there must be $5.00 in quarters here." I had just raided my piggy bank earlier. I reached in and pulled out a handfull, rich with silver change. "You can have it all if you'll help me get this sofa into my house!" I sort of handed him all this change and reached into the other pocket and pulled out a bunch more. He poured the change into a satchel he was carrying.

Together we huffed, and twisted and turned the couch one way then another, up the stairs and into my great room. Next we took our old sofa downstairs to the garage. We were now hot and sweaty dispite the cold. I thanked the young man profusely and told him I didn't really want the "Coupon Book" he was peddling. I was happy. He was happy. I had accomplished what I never could have done alone and he had seven or eight dollars, more than he had seen all day. I learned a valuable lesson about being nice to strangers, how good it feels and he learned that not everyone would slam doors in his face. I would have asked him to stay a few more minutes and get warm but I had to get ready for my night job.

Deb doesn't know about the sofa yet. She's going to be so surprised and pleased when she gets home from work! We have been ashamed to have people come over and visit because of that old tattered sofa. It was going to fall apart any day. The new one (new to us) is bright and clean, smaller than the old one, but comfortable and sturdy. It dresses up the entire room. She should get home in a few minutes and she'll call right away.

(25 Min. later)

Deb just called and she can't believe it! "Where did this come from?! Did Mike (our son) come over? It looks great!" I could tell she was smiling. "I even like the colors."

Like I said, I made it another day.

I have arrived at another harebrained scheme: The guitar trip from Hell! The journey would start on Friday Morning with a four hour drive to (drumroll) Nashville. I would spend all afternoon visiting different music/guitar shops, playing the greatest selection of used instruments in the world! I would take names of owners, get on mailing lists, ask for notification of availability/prices on particular instruments, stuff like that. I could also hawk some of my songs but that would be secondary.

I'd keep my ears open for appearences of rising singer/songwriters at the local clubs. Maybe even The Bluebird Cafe. I'd take that in on Friday night. I have an old high school friend who lives there...I'll bet I could stay with her. I also have a first cousin living there whom I haven't seen in many years but we love each other dearly and I'm sure she would welcome a visit! So there are lots of possibilities.

Such a trip would be on the cheap! But basically we're talking about gas and food, right? Plus I love to travel, I entertain myself two hours each day on my commute to and from work, so four hours on the interstate would be a piece of cake. Yep, I'll have to think about this some more.

Another Thanksgiving in the Tank.

Deb has lost 30lbs on the The South Beach Diet! Me, I'm down 7 on the Tom Love Poverty Diet and I'm hungry.

Played a Lowden Guitarat Galaxy, very nice sound but pricey. The 20 yr. old Yari from a previous post was gone. But the Everette was still there. Sweet!

Deb is flying to Phoenix (Scottsdale) on Thursday and I'm not.

I need to get busy at work. Evaluations are approaching.

I watched the Charlie Rose interview with John Burns (NY Times correspondent) Wednesday night. I have always respected Charlie for his honesty for the level of honesty he requires of his guests. John Burns has spent two tours as war reporter in Iraq and is preparing for his third.

His answers were to tough questions and were not what I expected. The social, economic, and political currents in Iraq are exremely complicated. Fox News may have it right about one thing: We're not be getting the whole story. It would be impossible to get the whole story in 5 minute segments from talking heads. This Interview is 53 minutes and it is riveting.
